Student Counsellors

School counsellors support student learning by offering personal, educational and career counselling, and connecting with parents and teachers to promote student success. They also provide information on financial assistance, awards, loans, scholarships and bursaries. Referrals or liaisons with social agencies, educational institutions and government agencies are made when required. They will meet with students and parents to discuss programming needs, scholarship opportunities, learning concerns, post-secondary entrance requirements, etc. Appointments with a counsellor may be booked throughout the year in the Student Services office or by calling 403-286-5092 option 2

Timetable/Course Change Requests

  • Master timetables are built based on student course requests and school-wide balancing.
  • Students are expected to be available during school hours to attend their classes.
  • Students are expected to commit to the courses they select and attend all scheduled classes.
  • Course changes are limited and only approved in exceptional or clearly defined circumstances.
  • Requests based on specific teachers, preferred peers, or preferred semester/periods are not accommodated.
  • Course availability, class size balance, staffing, and prerequisites determine what changes are possible.

Course Change Windows

  • Course change requests are only accepted during specific windows, usually:
  • Late August/Early September (Semester 1)
  • Late December/Mid-January (Semester 2)
  • Outside these windows, changes are typically limited to withdrawals only, and only if credit requirements or graduation requirements are still met.
  • Students are encouraged to try new skills and embrace new experiences to improve resiliency skills as they progress through high school.

Approved Reasons for Course Changes

Course changes may be considered for:

  • Missing a graduation requirement
  • Missing or completing a prerequisite
  • Courses scheduled out of sequence
  • Academic pathway changes (e.g., -1 to -2 or vice versa, when appropriate)
  • Balancing an uneven academic timetable
  • Summer school completion affecting a scheduled course
  • Very limited elective/option changes if space in courses

Requests That Will NOT Be Approved

  • Requests for specific teachers or classmates
  • Requests for preferred periods or semesters
  • Repeating a completed course to improve a mark
  • Adding a course without the prerequisite
  • Upgrading academic streams mid-year

We support our students in the following areas:

  • course registration
  • course sequencing
  • course pre-requisites
  • timetable issues
  • post-secondary questions
  • scholarship & bursary information

Our student counselors can also support students needing:

  • academic counseling support working through issues that impact learning and life
  • emotional counseling

Changing Courses

Should students require a change in classes, they must make an appointment to see a school counsellor at the identified time before the semester begins. Teachers or administrators may recommend that students move to an alternate course.

Dropping Courses

Dropping courses is strongly discouraged and may occur only under exceptional circumstances. Students who drop courses must do this prior to the end of Term 1 or Term 3, in consultation with their school counsellor. After this date, Grade 11 or 12 students requesting a class drop must complete a Course Withdrawal Form, which they obtain from their school counsellor and submit to the main office.
