Podcast Examines Digital Distraction and Family Well-Being

A recent episode of Dr. Greg Wells’ podcast offers a timely conversation on digital distraction, mental health, and the growing influence of technology on family life. Relational neuroscience indicates that many families are now effectively co-parenting with the internet, often at the expense of connection, co-regulation, and well-being. The conversation offers practical strategies for restoring healthier habits, including phone-free bedrooms, daily screen-time checks, and replacing screen use with face-to-face connection. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: Grade 12 graduating students planning to attend a post-secondary institution this fall should be actively searching and applying for scholarships. There are many Calgary-specific scholarship opportunities available through EducationMatters and Calgary Foundation, as well as Bowness-specific awards available through EducationMatters.

Information from the spring scholarship presentation provided by Student Services has been posted in the D2L Wellness Shell. Many application deadlines are approaching soon, so be sure to review the information and apply as early as possible.

Are you a female high school student interested in engineering? Suncor is currently accepting applications in their Girls in Engineering program-a four week paid summer placement to shadow engineers and discover what it takes to pursue a career in engineering. Deadline: May 22, 2026. Scan the QR code on the attachment to apply or look for an email in your CBE email.

Summer Work Experience: Students have the opportunity to earn credits during their summer employment. The program runs from July 2-August 6, 2026. For more information and how to apply, go to the Chinook Learning Services website and look under Off Campus. You can also ask your school counsellor or email Ms. Lee, the work experience teacher! Deadline to apply is June 12. Here is the application!

Students must complete the Chinook Off-campus RAP or Internship Application Package Summer 2026 (pdf) only after they have a job placement. Deadline is: July 17, 2026.

Volunteer Opportunities: If you are looking for things to get involved in, consider volunteering as there are so many opportunities available! Calgary offers numerous youth volunteer opportunities, with organizations like the Calgary Public Library, Youth Central, Calgary Food Bank, Calgary Zoo, and YMCA providing programs for various ages and interests. Search their websites for more information and see other volunteer websites like the ones below:

Youth Central - Explore volunteer opportunities with Youth Central and the Youth Volunteer Corps. Meet like-minded youth, earn school credits, and more!

CASINO VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Bowness High Parent Advisory Council has been slotted a casino for Sunday May 31 and Monday June 1 at the Aces Airport Casino. We will need to fill all of the volunteer positions in order to make the casino successful for the school. If we do not fill all of the positions the casino will be cancelled.

Please sign up on the following Sign Up Genius link  - Casino Sign Up May 31 & June 1

Funds received for volunteering at a casino are substantial, the last casino brought in a profit of almost $80,000. The funds are used to enhance educational experiences for students and provide items that the school is unable to purchase due to budgetary constraints. Examples of items paid for with Casino fundraising in the past are learning resources for core subjects, lab equipment, technology and classroom upgrades, specialized equipment for CTS courses and physical education equipment.

Please read the following carefully before you sign up for a position.
No experience is necessary to volunteer for a position but please read the descriptions to select a role that is a good fit, this will ensure that the casino runs smoothly. We will have a casino appointed advisor working with us for the duration of our event so will have lots of help along the way.  Volunteers can only work one position during the two day casino event. For example a volunteer who worked as a Cashier on Day One cannot come back and work as a Chip Runner on Day Two. Volunteers can work more than one shift during the event but will need to be scheduled into the same position for both days. If you would like to work both dates please sign up for the same shift on both days.

If you have any questions or need help with the sign up please email Lisa McGregor at bownesscasinochair@gmail.comThank you for volunteering your time!

Absences – just a reminder you can email us – 24 hours a day – with student absences, late arrivals and early departures. Bowness@cbe.ab.ca  Please include the student’s first and last name, and the reason, and specific times if leaving early or arriving late. Please also remind students that if they arrive late, or leave early, they need to sign in or out at the office in order to maintain an accurate record of their attendance. Any changes to attendance need to be addressed with the teacher, who will advise the office.
